The violent confrontation left several individuals injured, with some requiring urgent medical attention at Kangundo Level 4 Hospital. The attack, believed to have been carried out by locals with vested interests in the illegal trade, has sparked outrage among residents and authorities alike.
In a shocking turn of events, one of the village elders was abducted and held hostage by the assailants, remaining incommunicado for several hours. His disappearance led to an intense search, causing further tension in the already volatile situation. Leaders Condemn the Attack, Vow Action
Kangundo Sub-County Coordinator, Hon. Moses Musyoka, has strongly condemned both the illegal charcoal burning and the violence meted out against the village elders and leaders. Speaking on the matter, Hon. Musyoka termed the attack as a cowardly act designed to silence those advocating for environmental conservation.
“This is unacceptable. We will not allow criminal elements to intimidate and harm those working to protect our environment. We will ensure that the perpetrators are brought to book and justice is served,” he stated.

He further reiterated the government’s commitment to cracking down on illegal charcoal burning, warning those involved that their days are numbered.
Illegal Charcoal Burning: A Growing Concern
Charcoal burning has remained a serious environmental issue in the region, leading to massive deforestation and land degradation. Despite efforts by local authorities and environmentalists to curb the activity, some individuals continue to engage in the trade due to its profitability. However, the recent attack on village elders and local leaders has taken the fight to a new and dangerous level, exposing the risks faced by those advocating for environmental protection.
Calls for Collective Action
Local leaders and residents have now called for urgent and collective action to end illegal charcoal burning in Kavilinguni. Many fear that if such violent resistance is not addressed, efforts to protect the environment and enforce the law will continue to face major setbacks.
Authorities have launched investigations to track down the perpetrators, vowing to take stern action against those responsible for the attack. The community is urged to cooperate in providing any information that could lead to their arrest and prosecution.
As the fight against illegal charcoal burning intensifies, one thing is clear—standing up for environmental conservation is becoming increasingly dangerous. However, with the commitment of leaders and the unity of the community, justice will prevail, and those responsible for the violence will be held accountable.
