In a tragic turn of events at Kavisuni market in Kisasi district, Kitui, a pastor met his demise at the hands of law enforcement during a violent robbery. This disturbing incident sheds light on a startling duality, as the perpetrators were not only preachers by day but also operated as members of a criminal gang by night, managing two churches in the Matinyani area of Kitui West.
The Kitui Pastor Killed while stealing was later identified as Ezekiel Muinde Mwangangi, led congregations at Heaven City Chapel in Soweto and had recently overseen the establishment of a new branch at Kauma Market. Despite his role as a religious leader, Mwangangi, alongside an associate, engaged in criminal activities, posing a stark contradiction to their outwardly pious personas.
During the robbery, Mwangangi and his accomplice, both armed, impersonated police officers to gain entry into a wholesale shop owned by Muli Munywoki. Under the guise of investigating stolen goods, they coerced Munywoki into surrendering cash and valuables from his shop. However, their criminal endeavor was interrupted when police from the nearby Kavisuni police post responded to the alert.
Upon arrival, law enforcement officers confronted the robbers as they attempted to flee the scene on a motorcycle, with Munywoki in tow. Despite commands to surrender, the assailants made a desperate attempt to escape, prompting the police to resort to lethal force. Tragically, Kitui Pastor Killed while stealing was fatally shot during the altercation, while his accomplice managed to evade capture, albeit wounded.
Unbeknownst to the responding officers and bystanders, the robbers, including the deceased pastor, held prominent positions within the religious community of Kitui town and its environs. Investigations into Mwangangi’s background revealed that he hailed from Tiva village in Kwa Vonza location and had connections to a renowned supermarket, where his wife was gainfully employed.
